Yesterday, the music world suffered a profound loss with the unexpected passing of Croatian pianist Matija Dedić, at the age of 53. His piano, a source of inspiration and emotion, will be sorely missed. Although we were not close friends, we occasionally crossed paths at the airports in Belgrade and Zagreb; those brief encounters felt meaningful. It's moments like these that stay with us and shape our memories.

The First Encounter

I met Matija for the first time at a concert in Zagreb, at SAX, about 15 years ago. He was playing with his trio. I had recently arrived in Croatia, didn't know many people, and didn't know who Matija was, his musical inheritance from his parents Arsen Dedić and Gabi Novak, nothing. Some people were talking at a table near the stage, and Matija told them off, reminding them that when a musician plays, you listen. That's a moment I never forgot.

Airport Conversations

Some people have a knack for leaving an impression, even during the hectic pace of travel. Matija was one of those people. While navigating the terminals of Belgrade or Zagreb, I found myself twice having brief but memorable conversations with Matija. Though we were both traveling for different reasons, those fleeting exchanges felt like reconnections with old friends, united by our mutual love for music.

During one of these brief interactions, I learned about Matija's profound dedication to his art. Despite the challenges of being a full-time musician, his passion was contagious. He spoke of the hours on the road, the badly paid gigs, the stress. Yet, it was the joy of connecting with an audience that fuelled his performances, how a single note could echo the emotions of an entire room, demonstrating the tangible impact of his artistry.

The Impact of Loss

Matija’s death has created a void in the music community. He was more than just a skilled pianist. He was woven into a network of musicians and friends mourning his absence. Friends and fellow musicians have highlighted his kindness, generosity, and exceptional talent.

It’s remarkable how one person’s talent can fill a room with heartfelt emotion. Matija could translate personal experiences into music that resonated with listeners. I never shared the stage with him, but I believe that those who did noted how he inspired them to explore their artistry more deeply. His legacy, thus, is not just his music; it is the inspiration he sparked in others.

A Musical Legacy

While my connection with Matija was not as deep as others, his legacy endures through the music he created and the lives he influenced. Matija made a lasting impact. The compositions he crafted will continue to resonate with listeners. Fellow musicians will carry forward the lessons learned from his dedication and creativity.

A musician's journey is defined not just by the notes played, but by the relationships formed, the stories shared, and the passion ignited in others. Matija exemplified what it means to be committed to an art form that reaches beyond oneself, forming connections that inspire and endure.

Remembering the Connection

Reflecting on my encounters with Matija Dedić, I am reminded of the unique nature of musical relationships, even those that seem casual initially. The abruptness of Matija's passing serves as a poignant reminder for us to cherish those moments of connection, regardless of how brief they may be.

Though the music world may feel poorer without Matija's piano, his spirit and artistry will continue to ignite passion in new generations of musicians. Our collective love for music transcends beyond friendship, creating a community that celebrates talent and creativity in every form. His legacy will live on, and it is our responsibility to keep his memory alive in our hearts and in the melodies that follow.
