Greed like there is no tomorrow...

Today I am sad, and angry. Emotional turmoil since yesterday following the loss of a friend, Sara Projkovska, one of the 59 fatal victims of the fire that broke out in the early hours of the morning at a night club in the city of Kočani in North Macedonia.

This tragedy, just like the collapse of a canopy above the entrance of the railway station in Novi Sad, the 2nd largest city in Serbia, that made 15 fatal victims last November, are a consequence of greed, the need to earn always more, more money or more power, like there is no tomorrow!
Indeed, there is no tomorrow for the victims of a greedy club owner who had no licence to operate and no safety measures in place, no sprinkler system, a highly flammable roof, and about 500 people attending a concert in a space with a capacity for 250. There is no tomorrow for the victims of greedy public servants who do not carry out inspections to ensure that safety measures are in place. There is no tomorrow for the victims of greedy contractors who use low quality materials and poor construction standards. There is no tomorrow for victims of greedy politicians who award contracts and licences to unscrupulous owners and dishonest contractors, instead of exercising the duty of care for the tax payers who elect them!
These 2 tragedies were not the result of a shooting or a terrorist attack. They were the result of public negligence and private greed and total disregard for duty of care, which is the legal responsibility to avoid any omissions that could reasonably be foreseen to cause harm to others. Harm was caused, there is no tomorrow for the victims.
I'm sad and angry...
